In online EMDR therapy, I'll guide you through rapid eye movements, taps, or sounds while you focus on a painful memory or negative thought. This process mimics REM sleep, helping your brain reprocess distressing experiences and reduce their emotional charge. For example, EMDR can help reframe triggers that cause panic or PTSD spirals. Over time, EMDR helps your brain and body heal, allowing you to approach memories with compassion and feel lighter, clearer, and more focused on the present and future.

EMDR therapy doesn't happen right away - there are a few stages we'll work through first before the actual physical movements start, to ensure a solid foundation is set for your healing. Read on to learn more!
History and Planning:
We'll begin by gathering information about your history, including any traumatic events, distressing memories, and current symptoms. This phase helps identify the specific targets for EMDR therapy, such as particular memories, negative beliefs, or body sensations that need to be processed. Normally this process takes 1-2 sessions!
Preparation:
We'll review the EMDR process in detail, including how it works and what you can expect. You'll also learn coping strategies to manage any emotional distress that might arise during or after the sessions. This might include mindfulness techniques, deep breathing, or visualization exercises. Expect another 1-2 sessions for this phase - but sometimes it can be longer, or shorter, depending on your situation & needs!
Assessment:
We'll work together to identify a specific memory or thought that will be the focus of the session. You’ll be asked to visualize this memory and identify the negative belief associated with it, such as "I am powerless" or "I am unsafe." You’ll also be asked to rate the intensity of the distress on a scale from 0 to 10. This step of the process is incorporated all the way through Step 8, usually in the same session!
Desensitization:
This is the core of the EMDR process. As you focus on the distressing memory or thought, your therapist will guide you through a series of eye movements, tapping, or sounds. These bilateral stimulations help your brain process the memory in a new way, gradually reducing its emotional impact. You’ll continue this process until the distress associated with the memory significantly decreases.
Installation:
Once the distressing memory has been desensitized, we'll work to help you replace the negative belief with a positive one, such as "I am strong" or "I am safe now." You’ll focus on this new belief while continuing with the bilateral stimulation, helping it take root in your mind.
Body Scan:
You'll be asked to pay attention to any lingering physical sensations related to the memory. This step ensures that the trauma has been fully processed and that no residual tension remains in your body. If any discomfort is still present, you’ll continue with the bilateral stimulation until it subsides.
Closure:
The session ends with a grounding exercise to help you return to a calm, centered state, if needed! We'll ensure that you feel stable and supported before concluding the session. You’ll also discuss any coping strategies to use between sessions if any distressing emotions arise.
Reevaluation:
In the following sessions, we'll check in to see how the processed memories and beliefs have held up. This phase helps determine whether additional sessions are needed or if the focus should shift to another memory or issue.
By the end of your EMDR trauma therapy journey, you'll have a clearer, more compassionate view of yourself and your life. You’ll feel lighter, more focused, and ready to move forward with confidence!

After completing the first two phases of EMDR, the active part of the EMDR therapy process begins. For some traumatic memories, one session may relieve distress, but deeper or chronic traumas often require multiple sessions for full relief. We'll check in throughout to estimate how long it might take to address your specific concerns. Most people experience some relief in the first session, regardless of trauma severity.

Nope! You are fully awake and aware during the EMDR Therapy process, and you have total control over your body, mind, and reactions. The eye movements, tapping, or audio fees are simply providing a way to connect your brain more actively in your wake-state, to help uproot that negative crap you don't need anymore! If you want to learn more about EMDR vs. hypnosis, I recommend reading this.

The short answer is - maybe!
Disassociation is often used to describe common experiences like daydreaming or nostalgia. In EMDR, we focus on specific memories, and it's normal for other memories to surface during the process.
True disassociation—feeling detached from reality or your body—can occur, but it's rare. If disassociation happens, we'll work together to build coping skills and adjust the intensity of the EMDR processing.

It's common to have concerns, but even skeptical individuals often find that approaching EMDR with an open mind makes a big difference. If we encounter emotional blocks, we'll actually use more EMDR to address them!
We'll assess any subconscious beliefs that may be limiting progress and target them with EMDR. If this still feels challenging, we can explore other options like traditional talk therapy or music therapy, depending on what works best for you.
